Speaking
at the Garfield County Energy Advisory Board, COGCC Director Lepore discussed COGCC’s
voluntary water monitoring program where operators report water quality
statistics in areas where the oil and gas industry is active. With approximately 90% participation from
industry, Lepore hopes to transition
this program into mandatory reporting requirement. In addition, Lepore highlighted Garfield
County’s joint venture with Colorado State University to study air quality in
active oil and gas areas. These new
water and air quality projects are designed to establish base levels of pollutants
so the COGCC and other state agencies will know the actual effects of industry
activity.
