Sally
Jewell, chief executive of Recreational Equipment Inc., or REI, has received
President Obama’s nomination for Secretary of the Interior. Ms. Jewell is a champion of conservation,
drawing praise from the Audubon Society and other groups, and has also worked
in resource development as an engineer for Mobil Oil Corporation. By appointing a businesswoman to the head the
Department of the Interior, President Obama’s administration has moved away
from the recent trend of appointing prominent Western politicians and attorneys
to the post. If confirmed, Ms. Jewell
will replace the outgoing Secretary, Ken Salazar.
